During a vulvar biopsy, a tiny piece of tissue from the outside of the vagina is sampled to obtain more information about a growth, discoloration, or rash. This procedure is also performed if you desire removal of a mole or wart that is bothersome and/or has not responded to other treatment.
No preparation is needed; however, be sure and wear loose comfortable clothing.
After cleaning the area, we will inject a small amount of local anesthesia using a tiny needle. You will feel a stick and a burn that will last about 3-5 seconds. You will feel nothing further other than a little pressure. A tiny sample of tissue will be obtained and sent to pathology at Northwestern Hospital for analysis. In most cases, a yellow-brown medication called Monsel's solution will be applied to the area with a q-tip to stop bleeding. Sometimes a dissolvable stitch or cautery is required.
After the local anesthesia wears off, you may be a little sore. Usually, 400 mg of ibuprofen will be enough to take care of any discomfort. Do not be alarmed if there is a slight amount of bleeding. Apply pressure using a pad or tissue. If the bleeding is heavy or continues, call the office.
When you urinate, either gently pat dry or rinse with a peri-bottle filled with warm water. Do not rub the area. A blow dryer on a warm setting is soothing if you are sore.
Tissue analysis usually takes 5-7 days. If you have not heard from us one week after your biopsy, please call for results. We will let you know if any subsequent tests or treatment are necessary at that time.
When can I resume normal activity after this procedure?
Please refrain from exercise and intercourse for 24 hours. Depending on the location or size of the biopsy, you may need to restrict activities longer. If that is the case, we will let you know.
Can I go swimming?
You may go swimming in 24 hours unless we tell you otherwise.
How long does it take for stitches to dissolve?
Stitches will generally dissolve within a week.
