Vaginal Hysterectomy

With a combined 50-year experience of performing hysterectomies, Drs. Streicher, Blumenthal and Goldman have a level of expertise rarely found.

Talking to women before and after their surgery have afforded us a unique perspective regarding the impact of hysterectomy on women's lives. We believe that the more information a woman has prior to surgery, the better the choices she will make and the better her long-term outcome will be. While many hysterectomies are appropriate and beneficial, there are still women who have unnecessary surgery or are not offered less-invasive alternatives.

Surgical technology has exploded in the last five years and many women are candidates for uterus-sparing options, such as endometrial ablation, uterine artery embolization, or myomectomy. For the woman who is best served by removal of her uterus, we make the experience a positive one by offering the least invasive procedure that is appropriate, including vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopic outpatient hysterectomy, robotic-assisted hysterectomy, and procedures that offer preservation of the cervix and ovaries.

We present options and alternatives in a balanced, objective and scientific manner so that women looking for alternatives won't feel that they are being sold a procedure they are trying to avoid, and women who desire a hysterectomy will know what to expect. We also recognize that surgery is about more than what happens in the operating room, and we spend a great deal of time discussing pre-operative preparation and post-operative issues such as exercise, nutrition, sex, hormonal and emotional aspects of the healing process.

In short, we are experienced surgeons who empower women with accurate, unbiased information in order to make appropriate health-related choices that affect them while offering the latest technological and surgical advances.

Dr. Streicher has written the definitive book on hysterectomy and alternatives. Detailed information about all of the above options can be found in The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy by Lauren Streicher.
