The following instructions are for your comfort, health, and safety. They will help you prepare for your surgery. Please read them well in advance and follow carefully.  You can find additional information that will help you prepare for your procedure at Prentice/NMH on their Surgical Instructions page.

Weeks before your surgery:

If you have not already done so, please schedule a preoperative consultation with your physician to discuss the procedure itself and answer all your questions. You will review all general health problems and medications at that time.

  1. Preoperative clearance is medically necessary for patients over fifty and/or with health problems.
  2. All major procedures require an anesthesia consult seven to ten days prior to surgery with the anesthesia department at Northwestern. Call 312-926-7000 to schedule your consult.
  3. Please call the hospital at 312-926-2950 to pre-register.

Night before your surgery:
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING for 8 hours before arrival. This includes gum, candy, mints, coffee, milk and any food. Do not consume alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to surgery. We will let you know if you need to do an enema or bowel prep. If you are not sure, ask.

Do not shave your pubic or vaginal area for 72 hours prior as it will increase your risk of infection. If the area needs to be shaved, we will do it at the time of the procedure.

If you are having a laparoscopic procedure, please clean your belly button with a q-tip.

Morning of procedure:

Please see What to Expect on the Day of Surgery for more details.

Go to 250 E. Superior St., 6th floor, Chicago, IL 60611. The main phone number is 312-926-2000.

Arrive 90 minutes before scheduled procedure time. We may tell you to arrive earlier than the hospital tells you if we expect your surgery to start at an earlier time than the hospital predicts. Please arrive at the time we request.

You may wish to bring something to read, as the actual start time is approximate and delays can occur.

You may bring a family member or visitor with you.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be changing into a patient gown. You will find this especially helpful when returning home, as you will want to avoid any unnecessary pressure on sensitive surgery sites if you have any. Wear flat shoes; slip-on styles are best.

Remove any genital or umbilical jewelry.

You may brush your teeth, but rinse your mouth without swallowing any liquid afterwards.

If you take daily medication (such as for blood pressure, heart conditions, thyroid or depression), take it in the morning with a sip of water. You may shower or bathe, but should not shave hair from the genital area.

Do not bring jewelry or other valuables with you.

Bring a case for eyeglasses or contact lenses. We will provide a container if you wear dentures or partial plates.

If you are bleeding, please remove your tampon on arrival to the hospital when you change your clothes. Tell the nurse if you need a pad. Contact your physician prior to the day of your surgery if you develop a sore throat, cold fever or any other illness. If you eat or drink anything the day of the surgery, then your procedure may have to be canceled or rescheduled.

For patients going home the same day

You must have someone to accompany you home. You may not go home alone by car, taxi, or public transportation.

For patients staying overnight

A hospital gown will be provided; you may want to bring your own night clothes, robe slippers and personal toiletries.

Bring any prescription medication or herbal supplements you take on a regularly to the hospital in their original containers. Do not bring pain medication, as any pain medication you require will be provided at the hospital.
