Recent testing in our office indicated that your cholesterol level is above the recommended range. Initial testing for lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) is usually done without fasting. Repeat tests should be done after a 9-12 hour fast, and gives more accurate information. If you ate prior to having your blood drawn, please schedule a repeat lipid profile after fasting for 9-12 hours.
We recommend that you follow-up with your internist if, after fasting:
If your cholesterol is between 200-240 and or your LDL is between 100-130, changing your diet, increased exercise and weight loss will often significantly decrease cholesterol levels.
Please go to webmd.com for information on dietary changes for those with elevated cholesterol. A registered dietician is available for additional guidance. A repeat fasting lipid profile should be scheduled 6 weeks after dietary and exercise changes have occurred. If you do not have an internist, our office is happy to make a recommendation.
