Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue that normally lines the uterine cavity appears other places such as the lining of the pelvis, fallopian tubes, ovaries, bowel, bladder, and even unusual places such as the lung. Each month during menstruation, this tissue responds to hormonal changes just as the tissue that lines the uterine cavity does. Since it is not where it’s supposed to be, all types of problems can ensue such as scar tissue, inflammation, abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, painful intercourse, infertility and excruciatingly painful periods which get worse with time. The degree of pain is not necessarily related to the severity of endometriosis. Women with minimal endometriosis sometimes suffer the most.
Treatment is divided into two groups; medical and surgical. Sometimes medical and surgical treatments are combined. Choice of treatment depends on age, the desire for pregnancy, and how severe the symptoms are. We recommend you schedule a consultation to determine the best option for you.
