Bone Density

WHY do we recommend osteoporosis screening?

1.3 million women a year suffer from fractures as a result of osteoporosis. Thirty percent of women hospitalized for treatment of a hip fracture die. By age eighty, fifty percent of women have osteoporosis and are at significant risk of fracture if they fall. Bone densitometry is a low dose x-ray that is used to determine current bone mass and fracture risk.

WHO should have osteoporosis screening?

Women who smoke, drink alcohol, take Synthroid, or have an early menopause are all at risk for bone loss and possible fracture. Many women never reach their full bone density due to inadequate calcium intake during childhood. Some women are genetically at risk for osteoporosis even if they do everything right. At a minimum, you should have a baseline study of your hip and spine during the perimenopausal or menopausal years even if you exercise and take calcium. The need and frequency of follow-up scans will be determined according to results, and individual risk factors.

WHAT to expect During The Procedure

First you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire that gives us information regarding risk factors, and what you currently are doing to prevent or treat bone loss. You can print out the questionnaire here.

The exam is performed fully clothed. The technician will have you lie on the table and carefully position you to get the proper views.

We routinely do both hips and spine. The unit is able to detect fractures and body composition as well.

Results

A report and summary sheet filled out by our technician will be available 5-10 minutes after the completion of the study. You will be given a copy of your results and a brief explanation of what it means. Ideally you should schedule your bone density prior to your appointment with your physician so she can immediately discuss results. If you do not have a consultation scheduled, or your test is done following your appointment you will either be asked to schedule a consultation or we will call or e-mail you with information regarding your results.
